What is a Landing Page?
Today we’re going to talk about the design of your landing page. What is a landing page you ask? For those of you don’t know, a “landing page” is a page or website that a customer or user first gets to after clicking a PPC, banner ad, display advertising, etc. Basically the idea is that you promote a product or service, advertise it and direct the consumer to specific page. A landing page is the place where a user “lands” first.
For example, let’s say you are a motorcycle dealer. You have some 2010 models that you would like to sell. You talk to Don, your trusted internet marketing consultant, about setting up a pay-per-click ad campaign. Your PPC ad talks about the 2010 model. Now, you don’t want to have your ad talking about the 2010 model link to a different model, or your homepage, or some other random website page. A customer will click your ad looking to read about the 2010 model, see that this isn’t what they’re looking for, and leave your website.
What Does a Good Landing Page Have?
In the example above, a good landing page would have a big call to action and something that tells the customer, “You’ve come to the right place.” In general, here are some tips for a good landing page design:
- What the Customer Was Looking For!
- Good call to action
- An Enticing Headline
- Easy to Digest Content
- Less is More!
Let’s go through these and give a little explanation.
Your Landing Page Should Have What The Customer Is Looking For!
In general, you only have a few seconds to convince a customer that they are in the right place. Make sure a viewer they clicked the right link.
Make Sure You Have a Good Call to Action
The whole point of internet marketing or advertising in general is “make the phone ring” so to speak. Whatever your goal in having a person come to your landing page is, to call you, to sign up for your newsletter, to download a PDF or to make a purchase, make sure you call to action is loud and clear.
You Should Have an Enticing Headline
If you’ve got the customer in the right place, make sure they stick around. A good headline will draw the reader in.
Your Landing Page Should Have Easy to Digest Content
Let’s face it, today’s reader and internet user does not want to read tons of copy (this blog post aside!). Internet users tend to “scan” rather than to read. Making sure to have a good headline, bullet points, graphics, images will keep a reader interested.
